Spring really is such a wonderful time of year. There’s a certain freshness to it that lifts so many of our spirits and gets us excited about possibilities to come. With the Winter months behind us, we no longer feel the need to hibernate under the covers or stay curled up during evenings sipping hot chocolate, but rather we’re actually keen to venture outside and greet nature with our cheer.
But whilst this may strike a chord for a lot of us and we happily go singing our song, not everyone is so immediately drawn in by the colours and tastes of Spring. It can be tricky to adjust to this changing time, in hearing others discuss new plans and adventures and it can leave some of us clinging to the comforts of the colder months, unable to tread new waters.
Here are some things we can do, however we’re feeling, to help us settle into the months to come and tap into the cheeriness.
Declutter your living areas
During the Winter, we’re often more inclined to store and gather things in our homes; be it gifts we’ve received or items we’ve bought. There’s a comfort we feel in having lots around us. But what Spring offers us is the chance to freshen things up and make room for what’s ahead, by letting go of things past. This is why it’s an ideal time to have a good ol’ clear out and tidy up. And the great thing is that when we start to free up and make space in our physical surroundings, a sense of spaciousness and clarity forms inside of us too.
Lighten up your diet
With the warmer days of spring setting in, we’ll find that we can benefit from making a few simple changes in our diet. Many of us may have already intuitively started to opt for lighter choices in harmony with the new season. And just by eating a little fresher, we often notice our energy levels increase and our mood lightens. Salads and seasonal fruits and veggies are wonderful additions to any meal, so fill your plate up with the likes of asparagus, spinach, new potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli, apricots, rhubarb and mint. A lovely way to start the day and give yourself a healthy boost is to drink a fruit or green smoothie. Go on and give it a try!
Yoga for cleansing
Your yoga practice can be modified to help you to rejuvenate this Spring. By bringing in more of a flowing practice, with some dynamic sequences, you’ll see yourself naturally tap into a new rhythm and feel more alive. Flow with nature’s urge to awaken from its dormant state and open up to what life has in store for you. Yoga twists are fantastic in helping with the cleansing process, as they squeeze and stretch the abdominal organs, which help to remove any impurities and toxins in our system, thereby freeing up space for the new. Try and include poses such as Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Spinal Twist), Jathara Parivrtti (Lying Spinal Twist) and Janu Sirsasana (Head-to-Knee Forward Bend) in your routine. The positive effect a practice like this will have on you will keep you coming back to the mat time after time.
Have a lovely and refreshing Spring time everyone!
